Automatic ending of the defilements with stage attainment

Where is/are the canonical assertions that attaining each of the four stages of enlightenment automatically includes the cessation of certain defilements. Arhantship includes the cessation of all the defilements forever. As is known, this is part of the doctrine or dogma of the Mahasi system of Vipassana practice. Thanks, in advance for any direction in this enquiry.

Obviously this doesn't work like that.

Steve,

There are actually a lot of canonical references for that model. The Anapanasati sutta specifically mentions the four stages of enlightenment and how each stage eliminates certain fetters.

Nibbana is often talked in terms of the end of greed, aversion and delusion: see Asankhata-Samyutta.

A common expression for the end of defilements in arahants is that defilements are made like a palm stump rooted out so that it cannot grow again.

In the Satipatthana sutta, a reference is made to when hindrances no longer arise (section on the hindrances, in the fourth foundation).

This is not an argument for or against the model, just a factual statement about the Pali cannon.

Existence of corelation doesn't imply order of causation.

Afflictions do not arise in one who act skillfully.
Acting skillfully doesn't need path. In fact no path exist. Attaining path is equal to acting skillfully.

There is however no relief in that kind of thinking... so let's ignore common sense and indulge in identity views
